Excavators 70% Rule + Safety Tips

Operating excavators on slopes can be a challenging task that requires careful consideration and adherence to safety guidelines. Here are some tips to ensure a safer operation:

Examine the Conditions: Before starting work, assess the job site and the weather conditions. Factors like snow, ice, mud, and rain can impact the stability of the slope and the machine's ability to operate safely. If the conditions are unfavorable, consider waiting for the ground to improve before proceeding with the work.

Follow the 70% Rule: Avoid operating an excavator on slopes with a slope grade steeper than 70% (equivalent to a 35-degree angle). For mini excavators, you can use the blade to make sure the machine is leveled first before digging, just like in this image.

Choose the Right Track and Direction: Ensure that the excavator's tracks are pointed in the correct direction—up and down the slope, not sideways. This helps balance the weight and improves stability. Point the idlers (the wheels at the front of the tracks) down the slope to bear the force generated during digging.

Protect the Engine: Avoid operating the excavator on a slope that exceeds a 30-degree incline for extended periods. Steeper inclines can lead to engine lubrication issues, potentially shortening the equipment's lifespan.

Check Equipment Positioning: When traveling uphill, position the boom and arm correctly to maintain balance and stability. Stretching out the arm and keeping the boom low to the slope helps distribute the weight of the excavator and aids in climbing. You can also use the bucket teeth to anchor the machine and assist in climbing.

Remember, safety should always be the top priority when operating heavy machinery on slopes.
